Are you excited when you see models of Sylvanian Families? The houses, items and characters are so pretty that you just couldn’t take your eyes off them.
I am a huge fan of @sylvanianfamiliesmy because the toys are delicate and beautifully made. I have collected most of their older series and still admiring them from time to time. Since 1985, Sylvanian Families has been loved and known by many people in Malaysia. It is a nostalgic toy range that attracts people in different age groups. Even adults like me can be attracted to the models. Sylvanian Families are created based on three concepts – Nature, Family and Love. Children are free to explore the power of imagination and learn to care and share with one another.
It is obvious that my girls took after me. As an easy-going and on-the-go type of parents, we prefer our kids to expand their imagination. We didn’t like to limit their creativities. Hence, we like to get them toys that are open ended and have no boundaries. Sylvanian Families is an evergreen toy, it has a friendly appeal to everyone. It has many different aspects that appeals to a wide range of girls including playing-doll, decorating the homes, collecting the furniture, and changing the outfits. There are no rules or regulations which allows children to create their own stories. As a child, I always love doll houses and small miniatures. I would like my daughter to experience the way I have been brought up. Also, I do think that doll house and furniture are the best way to monitor my child’s development. I love watching her rearranging small furniture and expanding her creativities.

@sylvanianfamiliesmy also gifted us a set of Walnut Squirrel Family which is so adorable. My kids get to play pretend every now and then.
The furnitures are delicate and small. It looks so real that we almost wouldn’t mind living in the house ourselves. My daughter would pretend she is eating the bread and she knows how to place the bread on the tiny plate.
Value is added when you have an iconic person to represent the entire set. In this set, Chocolate Rabbit Girl is the boss of the house. Therefore, my daughter would make sure Rabbit Girl stays in the house whilst the Squirrel’s Family are visitors.
Here are some of the reasons why I love open ended toys like Sylvanian Families.
- Provide more opportunities for children to engage in critical thinking and problem-solving
In Red Roof Cosy Cottage, we need to insert the windowpane and staircase on our own. Sometimes, when I didn’t do it for my daughter, she would suddenly say to me “Mommy, Rabbit wants to go upstairs. Please, where is the staircase?” I am surprised that she knows the fact that you need to have a staircase in order to go up to the second floor.
- Allow my kids the freedom to explore, create and discover without guidelines
My firstborn would pretend that she is feeding the rabbit, putting her to bed. Sometimes she would rearrange the furnitures. I don’t usually interfere her by rearranging her furnitures. Who said a bed cannot be placed right outside of the house? It is okay for the dining table to be on the second floor. Pretend Play has no boundary and so does your imagination. Most of the time, I would see her having fun.
- Encourage imagination
Kids of today have more rooms for imagination. I don’t like to restrain my kids by having a book of guidelines and to ensure she follows the old school way. Hence, by playing with Red Roof Cosy Cottage, she is free to do whatever she wants. When it comes to playtime, she is the boss!
My eight months old is still trying to explore. We wouldn’t let her touch those small items but allowing her to play with the Walnut Squirrels Family which she would be delighted that she gets to be a part of our play pretend.
As most of the items are delicate and small, it is highly advisable that you supervise over your kids whilst they play.
